Deprescribing Medications
How Losing Weight Can Help Decrease and Get Off Prescription Medications
By Dimitri Gitelmaker, MD
Medications are a common treatment for many health conditions, from high blood pressure to diabetes. While medications can be lifesaving, they can also have unwanted side effects and interactions with other drugs. That’s why, as a physician specializing in weight loss, I often discuss the possibility of deprescribing medications with my patients. With appropriate diet, fitness and lifestyle modifications, patients can reduce, avoid and even eliminate the need to use prescriptions to manage certain chronic medical conditions.
What is “de-prescribing”?
Deprescribing is the process of reducing or stopping medications that are no longer needed or may be causing harm. With weight loss, many health conditions can improve or even go into remission, leading to a reduction in the need for medications.
For example, losing weight can improve insulin sensitivity and blood sugar control, which can lead to a reduction in the need for diabetes medications. It can also lower blood pressure, leading to a reduction in the need for antihypertensive medications. And losing weight can reduce the risk of heart disease, leading to a reduction in the need for cholesterol-lowering medications.
One of the key strategies I use in my weight management practice is to de-prescribe medications that may be contributing to weight gain. I have found that many medications used to treat chronic conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, and depression can lead to weight gain as a side effect. To address this issue, I work closely with my patients’ other healthcare providers to carefully monitor their medication regimens and make informed decisions about which medications to deprescribe. Through this approach, I am able to help my patients achieve their weight loss goals while also minimizing the risk of adverse side effects.
In my practice, I work with patients to develop a comprehensive weight loss plan that includes nutrition counseling, exercise recommendations, and behavioral therapy. By making sustainable lifestyle changes, patients can lose weight and improve their health. As they lose weight, we monitor their health conditions and adjust their medications as needed.
Deprescribing medications is a gradual process that requires careful monitoring by a physician. It’s important not to stop medications suddenly, as this can lead to rebound effects or withdrawal symptoms. Instead, medications are gradually tapered off as the patient’s health improves. It’s also important to note that deprescribing medications is not always possible or appropriate. Some health conditions require lifelong medication management, and medications can be a critical part of managing chronic diseases.
